Comfy-Org/ComfyUI on GitHub

★ 143,614 stars 16,989 forks Python GPL-3.0 licence

The ComfyUI GitHub repository is the closest thing the open-source world has to a professional studio for AI images: a node-based interface where generation pipelines are built as visible graphs — every model load, prompt encoding, sampling step and upscale a swappable node on a canvas. With more than 143,000 stars and nearly 17,000 forks, it is the engine a large part of the AI art community actually runs when they want control over every parameter instead of a slot machine. The ComfyUI GitHub project, developed by Comfy-Org and released under the GPL-3.0 licence, doubles as an API backend, so the same graphs you build interactively can run production pipelines. The official home of the project is the Comfy-Org/ComfyUI repository on GitHub, where you can browse the source code, releases and issue tracker.

What it is

ComfyUI began in January 2023 and has grown into the modular diffusion platform: a graphical interface and backend where each node does one job — load a checkpoint, encode text, sample, decode, save — and wires carry data between them, so a workflow is fully inspectable instead of hidden inside a black box. It natively supports a long, fast-growing model list: Stable Diffusion 1.5 and SDXL, SD3.5, the Flux family, Qwen Image, Z-Image, Hunyuan Image, HiDream and more, with new models typically arriving as new nodes rather than a new application to learn. The project’s headline claim is efficiency — an inference engine optimised for local consumer hardware, able, in the best case, to run large models on as little as 4GB of video memory through asynchronous weight streaming.

Key features

  • Graph-based workflows — every step visible, reusable and shareable; workflows save as JSON and embed inside generated PNG files.
  • The widest model support in its class — diffusion image models old and new, plus growing video and audio model support.
  • Custom nodes ecosystem — thousands of community extensions, wrangled through tools like ComfyUI Manager.
  • API and backend mode — execute the same workflows headlessly for products and batch pipelines.
  • Hardware efficiency — quantisation, offloading and streaming squeeze real work out of modest GPUs.
  • Total reproducibility — a shared workflow file recreates the exact pipeline, a property one-click tools cannot offer.

Who it is for

AI artists, content studios and product teams who need repeatable, brand-consistent image generation rather than lucky draws — and who are willing to climb a learning curve to get it. If your pipeline depends on the same character, style or composition across a thousand images, this is the tool. Agencies producing client visual content at volume — product shots, campaign variants, localised versions — are the commercial sweet spot. If you need an occasional social graphic, hosted one-click tools are honestly better matched: ComfyUI’s power is wasted on work that does not repeat, and its interface does not pretend to be beginner-friendly.

Getting started

Install the desktop app or portable build linked from the ComfyUI GitHub README, download one proven model — an SDXL or Flux build your GPU can hold — and run the default workflow before changing anything: the first successful generation teaches the graph’s logic better than any tutorial. Then change one node at a time: a different sampler, a LoRA, an upscale chain. Install ComfyUI Manager early, because the custom-node ecosystem is where the platform’s real range lives and managing it by hand does not scale. And save every working graph; your workflow library quietly becomes a production asset.

Our take

ComfyUI won the professional end of AI image generation by refusing to hide the machine: transparency, modularity and reproducibility beat convenience once money depends on the output. The costs are real — a steep first week, a custom-node ecosystem of variable quality, and GPL licensing that commercial embedders should review with care. But the direction of travel is clear: it has become the substrate other tools build on, including plenty of hosted services running it behind a friendlier face. We explained the node system from first principles in our MTD blog guide — read our full deep-dive — including when simpler tools are the right call. For serious image pipelines, the ComfyUI GitHub repository is the engine room.
